13th African Games Ghana welcomes Africa in Colour

Athletes and sportsmen from across Africa have been officially welcomed to the 13th edition of the African Games holding in Accra, Ghana this Friday, March 8, 2024.

Before 6pm GMT, the University of Ghana Stadium was already vibrating to the rhythms and beats of Africa.

By 6pm, the Ghanaian Head of State, Nana Akufo-Addo arrived the stadium and the ceremony started with the parade of athletes competing at the Games.

Out of 54 African countries expected, 52 were present as of March 8.

The athletes were set for the show as they appeared clad in outfits, depicting their countries.

Athletes from Ghana were at the end of the queue and were excitedly welcomed by their nationals with songs and applause.

This was followed by a series of speeches.

The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the 13th edition of the African Games was first to mount the rostrum, followed by the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ghana.

On their heels was the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat who called on the athletes to demonstrate sportsmanship.

He also indicated that sports is a powerful platform for human connection.

Then came the moment for President Nana Akufo-Addo’s address which was welcomed with loud applause and a standing ovation.

The Ghanaian President expressed joy with the fact that his country is able to host the African Games for the first time since its inception in 1965.

His speech was followed by oath taking by a representative of the athletes and that of the judges.

Colours and Rhythms of Ghana and Africa Take Centre Stage

The speeches gave way to cultural exhibitions depicting Ghana and Africa as a whole.

Music, graphic displays, bright lights and fireworks enchanted the audience.

Popular Ghanaian artists like Shata Wale and King Promise staged performances which left the crowd wowed.

The evening ended with a series of fireworks as if to say, you will be electrified by the beauty and warmth of Ghana and Ghanaians!
